New yoga studio opens near C&O Canal – by Beth Cope
Everyone from 25-year power yoga practitioners to those who are just a
little bit curious about the practice should be able to find a class
at Georgetown’s newest “urban oasis” for yoga...
The 31st street studio opened in early September. With its
four instructors, multiple-course offering, and scenic setting
overlooking the canal, the new Georgetown offering will likely provide
many with a spot for relaxation and invigoration.
“Our goal at Georgetown Yoga is to create a place where you can leave
your worries at the door, a sanctuary where body and mind can reap the
multitude of benefits that yoga has offered its practitioners for
close to 5,000 years,” reads a statement on the studio’s website.
Georgetown University graduate Margaret Burns Vap founded the studio
after moving back to the area from New York City. Vap said that she
started doing yoga to “stay sane” while she was living up north and
her husband was living in Washington. After Sept. 11, Vap decided to
move back to the area, and she brought her yoga interest along.
While practicing yoga in the area, Vap met the three women who would
become her other instructors. All three have been practicing for at
least five or six years and are knowledgeable in all of the courses
taught at the studio. They have each been certified through a
six-month, 200-hour course.
Georgetown Yoga offers 20 classes,
including Ashtanga, restorative, power and hot yoga as well as
beginning and intermediate classes. Ashtanga is a fast-paced course
and Ashtanga Mysore is a self-practice class. Both are for more
advanced participants.
The studio is located at 1053 31st Street on the second
floor. Vap said that she tried to make the studio “very inviting” by
painting the walls and ceiling with bright, soothing colors. She said
that the studio is full of light and that of its many windows overlook
the canal.
There is no pre-registration required for classes, which are
held...lunch hours and evenings and are scattered throughout the
morning and afternoon on the weekends. Classes cost $15 per session,
$130 for a 10 class pass or [$120 for unlimited monthly access.] The
yoga studio provides mats and props.
