Welcome to Georgetown Yoga’s January 2008 newsletter! I'd like to start this year with a special focus on the practice GY is founded on and that has inspired us: Ashtanga yoga.

When I first stepped onto a yoga mat at a local gym, I had no idea where it would lead me. After this first class, I felt amazing. At that point, I didn’t realize how much more there was to yoga beyond the physical practice. All I knew was that everything felt right. To this day, I still find myself saying the same thing after completing an Ashtanga Primary Series practice, and I now know why. After these first few Ashtanga yoga classes at the gym, I began to stick around after class to talk with the instructor about this style of yoga and inquired where I could learn more. After pursuing his suggestions of books to read and starting a home practice, I became more familiar with the physical practice and started delving into the other fundamental aspects as well. The Ashtanga Primary Series is known as yoga chikitsa, or “yoga therapy,” and as the name implies, it is a healing practice. Through a physically demanding practice, blockages in the body are removed, allowing prana, or “life force,” to flow more freely. And this is why I felt amazing. I feel a strong personal connection to this style of yoga and so does the studio, as it's the style upon which GY was founded. Knowing it is a challenging practice, we offer many ways to make it more approachable for beginners and a variety of fitness levels. Our Ashtanga Basics Enrolled Session (which starts this week!) is designed to teach the primary series in a progressive format, preparing students for our faster-paced Ashtanga drop-in classes. For those wishing to learn these fundamentals during an afternoon workshop, we also offer an Introduction to Ashtanga Workshop (coming up on Jan 20). Upon taking such preparatory classes, students can enjoy the benefits of a regular Ashtanga practice through our many drop-in classes. And, like my first teacher, all of our Georgetown Yoga instructors are more than happy to help you learn more about the practice. Please feel free to stick around after class, so we can answer any questions you may have. And watch for the amazing Ashtanga guest instructors we will be hosting later this year, including Kino MacGregor's third visit to our studio in May and Beryl Bender Birch's second visit in June.

I encourage you to revisit your commitment to your yoga practice this month, and our Ashtanga classes are the perfect way to do this - you will quickly see the effects this transforming practice has on your mind and body. Even better, you can practice Ashtanga for a good cause, human rights - GY is participating in World Yoga Day on Feb 3 (see below under Studio News & Events). Please feel free to e-mail me - liana@georgetownyoga.com with any questions or comments, and I look forward to seeing you in class soon!
